Free Write Friday: Write your own Stations of the Cross. If it feels like a place you want to engage today, consider spending time with each of the traditional fourteen Stations of the Cross this afternoon. Modeled after the stops along the Via Dolorosa (Way of Suffering) in Jerusalem, the stations walk through the events of Good Friday from Jesus being condemned, all the way through his burial: I. Jesus is condemned to death II. Jesus takes up his Cross III. Jesus falls the first time IV. Jesus meets his Mother V. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the Cross VI. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus (some of these stations are based on early tradition, rather than exclusively the gospel accounts) VII. Jesus falls for the second time VIII. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem IX. Jesus falls for the third time X. Jesus is stripped of his garments XI. Jesus is nailed to the Cross XII. Jesus dies on the Cross XIII. Jesus is taken down from the Cross XIV. Jesus is laid in the tomb Either in Scripture, or with some art-based form of the Stations, spend time with Jesus walking through these moments—and respond with your own words. For each station write a few lines of response or a short poem. Don’t respond with the “holy” words you think you should write. Write out your actual response (whether that is in the form of a question or a challenge or…?). Let these be your own personal “stations of the cross” this Good Friday.
