Artistic Afternoons: Draw a self-portrait, using only red, orange, and yellow. Look in the mirror and trace the curves of your face, the shadows, the brightness as if you were fire itself. As if the fire of Pentecost were within and without you, as if the Spirit were ever-present. Make this invisible reality visible in a way on the page today (even if you have no developed drawing skills, and it looks exactly like your kindergarten drawings, it’s worth putting crayon to paper and allowing this glimpse behind the veil to show up in some manner on the page!). Let it be a prayer as you block in the fiery shapes of your nose, your eyes, brows, lips, and hair. Naming that this, too, is (you are) beloved, holy, alive, and dancing with unseen flame that nourishes both your own inner world and offers its warm glow to the world around you. Hold this fire in your hand today (via your crayons, colored pencils, markers, pastels, etc.) and let your spirit be present with God’s this afternoon.
